Severe Walnut Allergy Policy

  • One of the teachers at Starbright has a severe Walnut. Even being touched by someone who touched a walnut will start an immediate reaction.
  • She immediately breaks out in a rash and can have breathing issues. If Benadryl does not work effectively, she will have to use an epi-pen.
  • Due to the severity of the allergy, Starbright cannot allow Walnuts in any form in the school. It is almost impossible to expect preschoolers to eat something with walnuts and then not touch anything even if they go to wash their hands right away.
  • Any walnuts and walnut products will set off this reaction.
  • Other tree nuts can also set off this reaction.
  • OTHER TREE NUTS WILL BE ALLOWED using the following procedure.
  • Parents are required to notify teachers if their child’s lunch contains tree nut products or peanuts and peanut products:
  • FOR ALL TREE NUTSIN LUNCHES:
  • Visual Indicator: place a PINK NUT CLOTHES PIN CLIP on the outside of your child’s lunch box.  (These clips are found in a basket next to the sign-in/sing out sheet on your child’s deck).
  • FOR ALL PEANUTS / PEANUT BUTTER, etc IN LUNCHES:
  • Visual Indicator: place YELLOW PEANUT CLOTHES PIN CLIP on the outside of your child’s lunch box.  (These clips are found in a basket next to the sign-in/sing out sheet on your child’s deck).
  • Also, if your child does have tree nuts or peanuts, Parents must indicate this on the sign in sheet in the column that says NUTS / LUNCH.  In that column write YES for either and what it is.  This way the teachers can do a quick scan to see what they are looking for when they enter the lunchroom.

Here is a list of items that could contain walnuts and tree nuts:

  • Pastries & other baked goods
  • Nut butter
  • Yogurt
  • Nut bars with fruit
